As educators, you have probably either heard stories or experienced first hand a tragic accident involving a student riding his bike to or from school. We have as well. Every year we hear stories from PTA moms, principals, teachers, and parents who share a tragic story of a student who was severely injured or killed in a bicycle related accident near their school property.
Unfortunately most kids today are influenced by peer pressure and images they see on TV, in video games and in the movies. Even at the pre-school age, kids are already challenging their parents about having to wear a helmet and ride with the proper safety equipment.
Our school assembly program attempts to reverse this disturbing trend by having our professional BMX stunt performers show them that it is COOL to wear a helmet! Your students look up to these athletes. During our amazing display of stunts they will witness first hand our athletes wearing the proper safety gear. Then they will listen when they hear our messages about the importance of riding safely and wearing the proper safety equipment.
We will demonstrate our 5 point bike safety check:
- Check your bicycle tires. Are they properly inflated? Are they in good shape?
- Check your brakes. Make sure you can stop.
- Check your seat and handlebars. Are they tight & adjusted properly?
- Check your chain. Is it too loose or too tight?
- And always, always, always wear your helmet.
We also will visually show your students how to properly wear their helmet and make sure it fits so it will protect them.
Unfortunately getting students to wear a helmet and the proper safety gear is just a part of the larger issue of bicycle safety. Students must learn how to ride safely on public roads. Are they wearing bright colored clothing? Do they ride where motorist can see them easily? Do they know the “rules of the road”? Do they know the correct hand signals? Do they obey traffic signs, lights, and markings? Do they know about automobile drivers “blind spots”? Are they aware of the dangers of riding at night (Do they have proper lights?).
According to the CDC more than 500,000 people are treated in hospitals each year from bicycle-related injuries and there are over 700 fatalities. The scary part is that almost 60% of all bicycle injuries involve children 15 years old and younger.
Our school assembly will help bring awareness to this growing problem.
